You Should Know
- You must meet these conditions to get a Learning Permit:
- Motorcycle Driving Licence: You must be 17 years old.
- Light vehicle Driving Licence: You can open a Traffic File after reaching the legal age of 17 years and 6 months. The Driving Licence is issued after you pass all the required tests and turn 18.
- Driving Licence for vehicles that transport passengers: The vehicle must have a maximum weight of 2.5 tonnes while empty, and a maximum number of 14 passengers without the driver.
- Driving Licence for vehicles that transport cargo: They must have a maximum weight of 2.5 tonnes while empty, and a maximum cargo weight of 2 tonnes.
- Heavy vehicle Driving Licence (for driving all types of light and heavy vehicles): You must be 20 years old.
- Light bus Driving Licence (for light vehicles and light buses with a maximum of 26 passengers without the driver): You must be 21 years old.
- Heavy bus Driving Licence (for light and heavy buses and light vehicles): You must be 21 years old.
- Driving Licence for tractors or light equipment (for all types of tractors and light equipment with a maximum weight of 7.5 tonnes while empty): You must be 20 years old.
- Driving Licence for tractors or heavy equipment (for tractors and light and heavy equipment): You must be 20 years old.
- You can transfer your permit to another branch of the same Driving Institute for free.
- To transfer your permit to a different Driving Institute, you must submit a Clearance Certificate and pay a fee that varies according to the institute. Follow the steps below:
- Apply through the website using your valid Emirates ID.
- An OTP is sent to your registered number to verify your identity.
- Click Update learning permit .
- Click Change institute and mention the reason.
- Choose to change branches within the same institute or to change institutes.
- You're contacted to complete the rest of the procedure at the new institute.
- You can change the Learning Permit from regular to special for free.
- You can change the Learning Permit from manual to automatic and vice versa after paying the required fees (AED 220).
- You can't change the Learning Permit category between different types of vehicles.
- Driving Licence categories available for POD are determined based on the medical report.
- If you're colour blind, you can still apply for a Learning Permit provided that you pass the eye test.
- The eye test is valid for 3 years.
- Once you pass the Road Test, you'll receive a temporary licence valid for 7 days through email.
- If you have a previous unexchangeable valid Driving Licence for a light vehicle issued in another country, you're exempted from training sessions as follows:
- If the licence has been issued more than 5 years ago, only 20 training sessions are required.
- If the licence has been issued less than 5 years ago and more than 2 years ago, only 30 training sessions are required.
- If the licence has been issued less than 2 years ago, only 40 training sessions are required.
- If you have a previous unexchangeable licence, you can have the golden chance by taking the Knowledge and Road Tests. The tests require no training hours and the chance is given only once. If you fail the Road Test, you must take the training hours without the theory part based on your previous experience.
- If you're younger than 21, you can renew your licence for 1 year.
- If you're 21 or older, you can renew your licence for 10 years if you're a UAE or GCC citizen and for 5 years if you're a resident.
- You can renew the Driving Licence through RTA website , Mahboub Chatbot, RTA Dubai , Dubai Now, self service machines, and eye test centres. The renewal fees are as follows:
- If you're younger than 21:
- AED 100 + AED 20 Knowledge and Innovation
- Additional fee of AED 500 if you request the mobile truck service to take an eye test only.
- Additional fee of AED 1,000 if you request the mobile truck service to take an eye test, renew the Driving Licence, and have it delivered.
- If you're 21 or older:
- AED 300 + AED 20 Knowledge and Innovation
- Additional fee of AED 500 if you request the mobile truck service to take an eye test only.
- Additional fee of AED 1,000 if you request the mobile truck service to take an eye test, renew the Driving Licence, and have it delivered.
- If you're younger than 21:
- If the licence expired more than 10 years ago, you must pay the periodic renewal fee and take the Evaluation Test.
- The Evaluation Test fees, if the Licence expired more than 10 years ago, are as follows:
- Training File: AED 200
- Learning Application: AED 100
- Handbook Manual: AED 50
- Evaluation Test: AED 200
- Renewal delay fine: AED 500
- Licence: AED 300
- Knowledge and Innovation: AED 20.
- Note: The delay fine is AED 10 per month calculated from the expiry date of the licence, with a maximum of AED 500.
- You can replace a lost or damaged Driving Licence through RTA website , Mahboub Chatbot, RTA Dubai , and Self Service Machines. The fees are AED 100 + AED 20 Knowledge and Innovation if you're younger than 21, and AED 300 + AED 20 Knowledge and Innovation if you're 21 or older.
- You can amend Driving Licence data through RTA website . The fees are AED 100 + AED 20 Knowledge and Innovation. You must pay all fees and fines to apply for amending the Driving Licence data.

- If no official test (Knowledge Test, Yard Test, or Road Test) is taken to obtain a Driving Licence within 6 months from the date of your last scheduled appointment, your file will be suspended. To resume training, you must reactivate the file and continue from where you left off, provided that the file suspension period doesn't exceed 4 years, the Knowledge Test was passed within the last 2 years, and the Yard Test was passed within the last year; otherwise, you must retake these tests.
- If the file has been suspended for more than 4 years, you must restart all training and take all tests as a new trainee.
- The required eye test results must be as follows:
- Light vehicles and motorcycles
- Right eye 6/18 -- Left eye 6/18
- Right eye 6/12-- Left eye 6/24
- Right eye 6/9 -- Left eye 6/36 or 6/60
- Right eye 6/6 -- Left eye blind.
- Heavy vehicles with or without spectacles:
- Right eye 6/6 -- Left eye 6/18 or 6/12 or 6/9
- Right eye 6/9 -- Left eye 6/9.

- Q : What's in the Dubai Drivers' handbook?
- A : The handbook includes information about road rules, such as safe driving and crash prevention tips, traffic offences, black points, and road signs and markings. This handbook is the only guide approved by the Dubai Government.
- Q : How often is the handbook information updated?
- A : The handbook is reviewed every 6 months, and an updated version is issued if necessary. However, if significant changes occur before the review is due, a leaflet with the updated information is provided with the handbook.
- Q : What do I do if I think the information in the handbook is incorrect?

- Q : Why does the handbook cost AED 50?
- A : The fee is set by the Dubai Government, and it includes the development and production of the handbook, and its routine replacement with new editions.

- A : Yes, you must purchase a copy of the light vehicle handbook. The handbook cost is automatically calculated and added to the payment receipt.

- A : You must purchase a copy of the handbook to make sure you have the most updated version.
- Q : What if I don't want to purchase a handbook?
- A : You can't obtain a Driving Licence.
- Q : Can I apply for changing the Learning Permit if it's expired?
- A : No, the Learning Permit must be valid.
- Q: How long does it take to complete the transfer of the file to another institute or emirate?
- A: You must ensure that the training and test data in RTA systems are updated. The file is transferred to another institute or emirate within 24 hours if all the conditions for issuing the clearance are met. This may extend to 48 hours if the institute has financial claims against the trainee.
- Q : If I open my Traffic File or take my driving lessons in Dubai, and then change my residence visa to another emirate after I pass the Road Test, which emirate issues my Driving Licence?
- A : Your licence is issued in Dubai because your Traffic File is opened in Dubai.
- Q : How many driving lessons do I have to take to change my Driving Licence from automatic to manual?
- A : No driving lessons are required. You only need to pass the Road Test.
- Q : What are the reasons behind not issuing the Driving Licence after passing the Road Test?
- A : The Driving Licence won't be issued if it's been 1 year or more since you passed the Road Test and if the transaction hasn't been completed within the specified period.
