Apply for Renewing the Vehicle Ownership and Changing The Plate Number

This service enables you to renew the ownership of a vehicle and to change its plate number in Dubai.

Eligibility
Individual customers, citizens and residents, and companies are eligible to apply for this service.
Required documents

For individuals

  1. Original Emirates ID to update the information in case of an expired ID
  2. Plate numbers
  3. Report from the police website if 1 or both plates are lost and if the plate number of the motorcycle is lost
  4. Electronic insurance of the vehicle
  5. Vehicle technical inspection if needed.

For companies

  1. Official letter in Arabic from the company
  2. Copy of the trade license
  3. Endorsement of Signature and Authorization letter
  4. Plate numbers to hand over
  5. Report from the police if 1 or both plates are lost and if the plate number of the motorcycle is lost
  6. Electronic insurance of the vehicle
  7. Vehicle technical inspection if needed.

  • 400 AED vehicle between 3 and 12 tonnes

Note: Service fees vary according to the size of the plate: 35 AED for the short plate and 50 AED for the long plate, and 200 AED for Dubai branded plates.

Process

Through website

  • The customer logs in using the username and password
  • The customer enters the vehicle’s details
  • The customer is required to settle the service fees by credit card
  • The customer receives the vehicle ownership certificate, the 2 new plates and the expiry sticker from the Customer Happiness Centre in Al Barsha or Deira and hands over the old plates.

Through service centres or service providers

  • The customer submits the required documents
  • The customer is required to settle the fees in person
  • The customer hands over the old plates
  • The customer receives the vehicle ownership certificate, the new plates and the expiry sticker.

Through call centre

  • The customer contacts the call centre on the following number: 8009090
  • The customer requests the renewal of the ownership certificate and the change of the plates
  • The customer is required to pay the fees by credit card
  • The customer receives the vehicle ownership certificate, the 2 new plates and the expiry sticker from the Customer Happiness Centre in Al Barsha or Deira and hands over the old plates.

Terms and conditions
  • The customer or the legal representative must be present in person
  • The remaining validity of the vehicle's insurance must not be less than 6 months
  • In the event of a delay in renewing the license of a vehicle, the customer is required to pay a fine for each month as follows:
    • 25 AED light vehicles
    • 12 AED motorcycle
    • 50 AED heavy vehicles and buses
  • Re-registration terms apply in case of expired vehicle ownership.

  • Question 1: When was the ownership e-card implemented for individuals?

Answer 1: Phase 1 on January 1, 2018: Government, rental and taxi vehicles.

Phase 2 on May 1, 2018: diplomatic and corporate vehicles.

Phase 3 on September 1, 2018: Individuals vehicles.

  • Question 2: What is ownership e-card and what details it includes?

Answer 2: The ownership e-card is an electronic document called (Vehicle License) sent to the customer via email. It includes all the ownership details including the expiry date, mortgage and insurance. This e-card is issued by the Road and Transport Authority and the customer has to print it or save it on their phone to show it to concerned authorities when needed.

  • Question 3: How can customers print the ownership e-card or any other document in case they didn’t receive an email or they wanted to verify the vehicle details, renewal date and insurance details?

Answer 3: The ownership e-card may be printed as follows:

    • Login to rta.ae.
    • Select Licensing services.
    • Scroll down the Certificate Verification service and press "Click Here".
    • Select service type "Vehicle License" then enter the vehicle details to show the print order.

Answer 4: The vehicle license features all the details related to the vehicle including the expiry date, the mortgage and the insurance details. It is sent via email to the customer in a printable format.

  • Question 9: What happens when the ownership details are amended?

Answer 9: In case any of the vehicle details get amended such as changing the plate number or the color:

- Details are updated on the ownership e-card and the vehicle’s license.

  • Question 10: In case the customer doesn’t have RTA application, can the vehicle license be printed through the customer service centre?

Answer 10: There is no need for the customer service representative to print the vehicle license. The customer may print it through the link sent via email.

  • Question 11: Is the customer obliged to replace the vehicle license once the electronic ownership phase implemented?

Answer 11: The ownership certificate is replaced only upon its renewal, or in case of replacement of lost/damaged license or change in ownership document such as change of color or plate number or adding or redeeming a mortgage.

  • Question 12: In case the customer’s phone number was registered wrongly, how can the link be resent to him?

Answer 12: The customers shall update their personal details though RTA Call Centre: 8009090. Also he can print the ownership e-card as follows:

Answer 13: The vehicle’s expiry date can be checked in several ways:

    • Through the details featured on the vehicle’s license
