You can also apply to participate in an open plate auction (hall auction) and an online plate auction, or purchase bundles of special plate numbers displayed on the traffic system.

Purchase a Special Plate Number or an Auction Special Plate Number

Through Website

  1. The customer logs in using his username and password or through UAE Pass.
  2. The customer selects Buy New Plate Number from Plates Services.
  3. The customer enters the required details.
  4. If the requested number is an auction special plate number, the customer receives the approval within 10 working days.
  5. The customer settles the required fees by credit card.
  6. The customer receives the ownership certificate and receipts through email and SMS.

Through Customer Happiness Centres or Vehicle Registration and Inspection Centres

Purchase Special Plate Number

  1. The customer applies for the service.
  2. The customer selects the desired number from the list of available numbers.
  3. The customer settles the fees and the price of the number.
  4. The customer receives the ownership certificate through email and SMS.

Purchase Auction Special Plate Number

  1. The customer submits the application at the centre.
  2. RTA studies the application after receiving it electronically.
  3. The customer receives RTA approval or rejection through SMS or email within 10 working days.
  4. The customer settles the required fees at the centre after receiving the approval.
  5. The customer receives the certificate electronically through email.


Participate in an Auction

Through Website

  1. The customer logs in using his username and password or through UAE Pass.
  2. The customer selects Subscribe to Auction (hall or electronic).
  3. The customer settles the security and participation fees.
  4. The auction starts.
  5. The customer pays the required fees by credit card or manager's cheque.
  6. The customer receives the plate ownership certificate and receipts electronically by email and SMS.
  7. If the customer deposited a cheque to participate in the auction, he must go to the centre where it was deposited to retrieve it. If the customer paid the insurance by credit card, the amount will be refunded to the card within 40 working days.

Through Customer Happiness Centres

For Open Auctions

  1. The customer submits the required documents.
  2. The customer deposits the security and the participation fees.
  3. The customer receives the payment receipt enabling him to access the auction.
  4. The auction starts.
  5. If the customer does not return the bid paddle at the end of the auction, an amount of 500 AED is deducted from the security fees.

For Electronic Auctions

  1. The customer submits the required documents.
  2. The customer deposits the security and the participation fees.
  3. The customer receives the payment receipt and continues the process to access the electronic auction.
  4. The auction starts.
  5. If the customer does not return the bid paddle at the end of the auction, an amount of 500 AED is deducted from the security fees.

Through RTA Dubai App

Purchase Plate Number

  1. The customer logs in using his username and password, or UAE Pass.
  2. The customer selects Plates then Purchase a Vehicle Number.
  3. The customer enters the details (plate number, code, type, digits, and price options).
  4. If the requested number is an auction special plate number, the customer pays a deposit and receives the approval within 10 working days to complete the transaction.
  5. The customer reviews the plate details and settles the fees.
  6. The customer receives the plate ownership certificate through email and SMS and can access it anytime through My Docs page.

General Terms

Special Terms to Participate in an Auction

  • If the customer does not settle the payment within the specified period, RTA confiscates the security cheque.
  • If the price of the desired plate exceeds 35,000 AED, committed customers do not have to submit a security cheque.
  • The customer must submit a security cheque in case he failed to settle the price of the number the first time and was listed as an uncommitted customer.
  • The permit to trade plate numbers must be valid.
  • The customer or the legal representative must be present in person in the auction.
  • The customer must have a valid UAE traffic file to apply for this service.
  • The customer can get the security cheque back from the Customer Happiness Centre - Umm Ramool if he does not buy any number.
  • The customer is required to settle the price of the plate by a manager cheque or by credit card if its value exceeds 50,000 AED.
  • The customer who wins the bidding must refer to the service centres within 10 working days after the end of the auction.
  • The customer is required to settle the price of the plate by a manager cheque or by credit card along with a cash amount of 120 AED for each number if its value does not exceed 10,000 AED.
  • If the customer does not pay during the specified period, the security cheque is confiscated and the customer is listed as an uncommitted customer and prohibited from participating in an auction for one year starting the date of listing. The customer is also prohibited from all plate services except for transferring the plate ownership to another person.
  • If the deposit was a cheque, the customer must refer to the Customer Happiness Centre - Umm Ramool the following day after the auction or during a maximum period of 6 months or else the cheque will be destroyed.
  • The customer’s security cheque is confiscated if the customer violates the auction regulations and procedures.
  • Uncommitted customers must provide a security cheque of 5,000 AED when applying to purchase bundles of special plate numbers over 3 consecutive applications (the customer gets the cheque back after paying the plate number fees).

  • Question 1: How can the customer receive the plates to register the vehicle?

Answer 1: The customer can receive the plates from the Customer Happiness Centre - Deira, or the Service Providers - plates factories centres.

  • Question 2: Is the customer eligible to own plate numbers if she is a Syrian resident sponsored by her husband who is a citizen and if they are both from Abu Dhabi?

Answer 2: No, she cannot buy or allocate plate numbers unless she has a traffic file.

  • Question 3: Can the customer purchase a special number if he has a traffic file in Dubai but his residence visa was issued in another emirate?

Answer 3: Yes, the customer can purchase a special number as long as he has a traffic file in Dubai.

  • Question 4: Is it mandatory to log in to the website to apply for a special plate number?

Answer 4: Yes, the customer must log in using his username and password.

  • Question 5: What is the traders auction?

Answer 5: It is the same as the open auction but exclusive to traders only.

  • Question 6: Can the customer keep the security fees to use them during the next auction?

Answer 6: No, the next auction requires other security fees and this is applicable for customers who settled the fees in cash, by cheque, or by credit card.

  • Question 7: What is the procedure to pay using a manager cheque?

Answer 7: In any type of auction, the manager cheque must be addressed to the Roads and Transport Authority with the payment date on it.

  • Question 8: At which centres can the customer pay the security fees using a manager cheque?

Answer 8: The customer can pay using a manager's check at Customer Happiness Centres Deira, Umm Ramool, and Al Barsha.

  • Question 9: Can the customer pay the security fees for the traders auction by manager cheque?

Answer 9: The security fees cannot be settled by manager cheque, but in cash.

  • Question 10: What is the maximum number of plates the customer can have during an auction?

Answer 10: There is no maximum number.

  • Question 11: What is the minimum amount of money that the customer can bid to start the open auction?

Answer 11: The minimum amount is 1,000 AED.

  • Question 12: When does the auction end?

Answer 13: Auction times or dates cannot be determined due to changes in operational requirements and internal approvals. The auctions are announced a week before their launch.

  • Question 13: How does the customer know that he won the number?

Answer 13: Once the auction ends, the customer receives an SMS.

  • Question 14: Can the customer participate in the auction after it begins?

Answer 14: Yes.

  • Question 15: Can the customer settle the price of the plate and receive the ownership certificate in case of having pending fines on his traffic file?

Answer 15: Yes.

  • Question 16: Can the customer settle the security fees if the manager's cheque is not issued in his name?

Answer 16: No, the manager's cheque should be issued in the customer’s name and should have a payment date.

  • Question 17: What is the maximum amount of money that the customer can settle using a credit card?

Answer 17: In regular cases, the amount cannot exceed 50,000 AED. However, in case of a 3-digit plate, the maximum amount may reach 150,000 AED.
