Showcasing 18 Cutting-Edge Smart Projects and Initiatives at GITEX Global 2024

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) features a distinctive stand at the GITEX Global 2024, the premier and largest gathering of technology creators and developers worldwide, positioning Dubai as a global pathway for technology and innovation. The on-going event kicked off, October 14, and will run until October 18 at the Dubai World Trade Centre and Dubai Harbour. It features more than 6,000 exhibitors and 1,800 speakers from 180 countries, along with technology experts and innovative start-ups in fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, mobility, and sustainable technology.
RTA is showcasing 18 smart projects and initiatives that leverage generative AI and virtual metaverse technologies. Key highlights include the the first and last-mile initiative for sustainable public transport, and AI applications designed to enhance traffic flow and optimize bus network management. RTA is also presenting a range of smart services, such as biometric scanning for public transport fare payments across Dubai Metro, Dubai Tram, buses, taxis, and marine transport, along with the multi-use nol card (Terhaal). Additionally, AI and big data are being utilized to predict vehicle plate prices and to monitor electricity and water consumption at metro stations. RTA also demonstrates how modern technologies like virtual reality are used for early detection of cracks and fractures to support maintenance activities.
RTA also introduces a range of services at its stand, including the Smart Station, which is a multi-functional pole designed to enhance pedestrian journeys and serve cyclists. Predictive technologies for better and more balanced distribution of passengers across metro carriages are also showcased, contributing to crowd management, and reducing congestion. Other features include the Green Road system for driver alerts, a smart robot, the multimodal transport platform, virtual reality-based bus inspections for maintenance, and microwave technology for crack detection. These and other initiatives are accessible via the RTA’s Dubai smart app, the S'hail app, the RTA's website, and smart kiosks.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, reiterated RTA’s commitment to translating the visionary outlook of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, in fostering well-being in the emirate and enhancing its global competitiveness by providing diverse options for residents, making Dubai the best city in the world to live in. RTA is also guided by the directives of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai, to transform Dubai into the smartest city in the world."
Al Tayer added: "GITEX Global has become the premier event and the largest gathering of technology creators and developers worldwide, positioning Dubai as a global hub for technology and innovation. The event has evolved at a rapid and calculated pace, achieving remarkable success and presence with every edition. It is now the most influential event in the field of technology, particularly following the launch of GITEX Africa, hosted in Marrakech, Morocco, last year, thanks to the efforts of the Dubai World Trade Centre team. The upcoming GITEX Europe 2025, set to take place in Berlin in May 2025, further expands its global influence."
Digital Strategy
al Tayer further added: "RTA remains dedicated to pursuing its vision of making Dubai the world's smartest city in road and transport systems while achieving global leadership in seamless, sustainable, and innovative mobility. RTA's Digital Strategy 2030 aims to create a flexible and scalable digital infrastructure that will position Dubai as the smartest city in the world, ushering in a new era of digital transformation and the adoption of emerging technologies. This strategy reflects the leadership’s vision of making Dubai the world’s top city in terms of digital well-being.
"RTA's strategy aligns with the Dubai Digital Strategy and focuses on collaboration with partners to drive operations and reinforce global leadership. It encompasses innovative digital initiatives across key areas such as digital twinning, the metaverse, robotics, ecosystems, enterprise solutions, artificial intelligence, and data.
“RTA's strategy will deliver several key deliverables, including a complete shift towards a flexible, data-driven transport system with 100% scalable digital infrastructure. Additionally, 95% of RTA's services will be digitally adopted, and 100% of its employees will be digitally empowered.”
AED 3.7 billion
RTA recorded a 16.7% growth in revenues from its digital channels in 2023 compared to 2022, with total revenues reaching AED 3.705 billion. The total number of digital transactions through these channels reached 821 million, marking a 1% growth compared to 2022. Transactions via smart applications reached 15.299 million, with a 29% growth rate. RTA’s real-time happiness index for its apps surpassed 95%, reflecting a 2% increase compared to 2022.

First and Last-Mile Initiative
As part of its participation in GITEX Global 2024, RTA showcases the First and Last-Mile Initiative for Sustainable Public Transport. This revolutionary system combines modern technologies with operational efficiency, featuring a smart, driverless public transport system. It offers an effective solution to traffic challenges in major cities, utilising dual tracks that allow mobility units to move efficiently within urban areas, contributing to improved daily mobility for residents and addressing the first and last-mile challenges.
Artificial Intelligence and Traffic Flow Efficiency
RTA is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance traffic flow and improve the efficiency of traffic signals and vehicle movement. Advanced algorithms and AI systems will enhance safety by analysing real-time data, controlling traffic signals, and providing predictive insights for efficient mobility management across the emirate’s streets and roads.
The Smart Station
At GITEX 2024, RTA presents its Smart Station initiative which is a multi-functional pole for cycling track users. The pole offers a range of technical features to enhance the experience for both pedestrians and cyclists. The pole includes a shade, seating, USB ports, a camera, an air pump, and essential maintenance tools for cyclists.
Metaverse through Apple Vision Pro
RTA demonstrates an innovative and interactive approach to accessing its data and services through advanced technologies and the metaverse. Using the Apple Vision Pro, users can explore and navigate Dubai by tapping into RTA's extensive transportation database. This cutting-edge technology allows users to experience Dubai's transport network and navigate the city with the support of RTA data via augmented reality applications.
nol Terhaal
RTA’s stand at GITEX features the nol Terhaal discount card initiative, offering multiple benefits such as paying for public transport fares, parking fees, and taxi rides within the emirate, along with a wide array of exclusive discounts. Additionally, the nol Student card is being showcased, offering numerous benefits to school and university students, making it safer, more affordable, and more convenient for them to use public transport, including the metro, tram, buses, and marine transport.
