Renewing A UAE Driving License

This service enables you to apply for renewing a driving license.

Eligibility

Individual customers, citizens and residents, are eligible to apply for this service.

Required documents

For citizens and residents:

  1. Original Emirates ID
  2. Eye test
  3. Clearance letter from the driving institute as proof of fees payment

For citizens living outside UAE:

  1. Original Emirates ID
  2. Copy of the passport with valid visa page
  3. Eye test
  4. Clearance letter as proof of fees payment
  5. Official authorisation stamped by the UAE embassy

Output

Renewed driving license.

Service fees

  • 100 AED for renewing a driver license
  • + 20 AED knowledge and innovation fees

Note: The fine for the delay in renewing the driving license is 10 AED per month, with a maximum of 500 AED.

Validity

  • 10 years validity for 21 years old and above

Ways to apply

Process

Through the website:

  • The customer uploads all the scanned required documents
  • The customer receives a temporary driving license to print while waiting for the original license which can be delivered through 2 channels:
    • Customer Happiness Centres in Deira or Al Barsha.
    • By courier, with an additional fee of 20 AED.

Through the centres or kiosk:

  • The customer submits all the required documents
  • The customer is required to pay all the due fines in one of the above mentioned Customer Happiness Centers.

Through the call centre:

  • The customer contacts the call centre and provides RTA with the lost or damaged driving license number
  • The customer is required to pay the fines by credit card
  • RTA verifies the submitted documents and issues a replacement for the lost or damaged license
  • The customer receives a temporary driving license while waiting for the original license which can be delivered through 2 channels:
    • Customer Happiness Centres in Deira or Al Barsha
    • By courier, with an additional fee of 20 AED.

Through the optical shops:

  • The customer submits all the required documents
  • The customer is required to pay all the due fines
  • The customer receives a temporary driving license while waiting for the original license which can be delivered through 2 channels:
    • Customer Happiness Centres in Deira or Al Barsha
    • By courier, with an additional fee of 20 AED.

Note: The validity of the temporary license varies between 5 and 15 days.

Terms and conditions

  • Renewing driving licenses for the customers aged less than 21 years old must be done through the customer service centres, smart screens, mobile application or website
  • Driving licenses issued in other emirates can be renewed in Dubai and vice versa
  • Personal attendance is mandatory. An authorised person can proceed with the transaction on behalf of the customer after getting the approval of the Driving License Department in RTA
  • All fines must be paid
  • Driving license must not be expired for more than 10 years or else the customer must take an evaluation test
  • In case the customer is 21 years old and above, the driving license can be renewed 6 months before the expiry date. In case the customer is less than 21 years old, the license can be renewed only one month before the expiry date
  • The trusted agents cannot proceed with the transaction for their customers if their branch is outside Dubai
  • The customer with a valid UAE visa can undergo the eye test outside UAE but it should be stamped by the UAE embassy
  • Standards for capturing personal photo:
    • The customer must wear a decent outfit, not obliged to wear the traditional outfit
    • Only Arab nationals can take a picture in the “ghotra and okal”
    • The customer must not wear a hat or a cap
    • Photos can be taken of other photos, only if they have a white background, with a dark outfit, or the opposite. Photos showing a side view are not accepted
    • The elderly customer, over 60 years of age, is not allowed to scan his ID photo. He cannot take the photo from another photo. The customer must be present for the photo
    • Photos taken from other photos are allowed only when applying for replacing a lost or damaged license or amending personal data. The presence of the applicant or a fist-degree relative or company representative is mandatory.

FAQs

  • Question 1: If the customer is on visit visa and has an expired Dubai driving license, can he renew the driving license?

Answer 1: No, the customer must have a valid residence visa. In this case, the customer can only apply for a replacement of a lost or damaged license.

  • Question 2: Is it possible to renew the driving license from other emirates in Dubai?

Answer 2: Yes.

  • Question 3: If the customer is renewing a driving license from other emirates, does he have to undergo an eye test even if the results are uploaded on the system?

Answer 3: Yes, the customer must undergo an eye test in one of the optical shops mentioned above.

  • Question 4: If the driving license is issued in Dubai and the visa is from another emirate, can the customer renew the driving license online?

Answer 4: Yes, the customer can renew the license online after making sure that all the details of the traffic file are updated on the traffic system according to the new residence visa.

  • Question 5: If the customer submits the photo to the optician and does the renewal online, which photo will appear on the new driving license?

Answer 5: As per the policy, only the Emirates ID photo will be used. However, if the said photo was not extracted for a certain reason, the customer can use the immigration photo or a picture from the camera or can even scan any other photo depending on the supervisor in the centre.

  • Question 6: What is the procedure in case there are missing information when applying for the license?

Answer 6: The back office team sends the below SMS to customers who have missing details so that the transaction can be completed. If the customer calls asking about the SMS, the back office team asks the customer to send a scanned copy of the passport and a valid visa to provide the details.

If the SMS does not include an email, the back office provides the customer with the content of the SMS stressing on the transaction number.

  • Question 7: What is the procedure in case the police cancels a driving license after reaching 24 black points?

Answer 7: The customer goes to Dubai Police to request a letter so that RTA can open a new traffic file for the customer to be able to take the test again.

In case the customer damages RTA property on roads, he must wait for estimating the damages. Once estimated, the customer or the insurance company is required to pay the fees, and then the customer goes to the customer service to get the clearance letter. The customer must present this letter to the police station holding the license.

In case the customer is drunk while driving, the police station will wait for the judge to take the final decision in the case. In case the license is confiscated, Dubai Police keeps it. In case the license is frozen or suspended, the police station sends it to Barsha Licensing Centre or Deira Licensing Centre.
