Winning Regional Award for Leadership in AI-Driven Traffic Management

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has won the 2024 Middle East Technology Excellence Award in the Artificial Intelligence (Government Entities) category for its pioneering use of AI in managing traffic flow via the iTraffic system, developed by RTA’s Dubai Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) Centre.
The award underscores the standing of the ITS Centre, one of the largest and most advanced traffic control centres in the world, as well as RTA's efforts to employ AI technologies and Big Data to enhance traffic flow, aligning with its vision: "The World Leader in Seamless and Sustainable Mobility."
Mohammed Al Ali, Director of Intelligent Traffic Systems at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, said: "Winning this prestigious award among governmental bodies reflects the pioneering and exceptional achievements of RTA in the field of information and communication technology. The iTraffic system employs AI to analyse traffic data and road conditions from various data sources, utilising vehicle detection sensors installed at various sites. It conducts predictive analyses to proactively manage traffic congestion and activate response plans in real-time, based on current and historical traffic data."
"The system identifies expected travel times and displays them instantly on variable electronic boards. It also provides accurate information on travel times and estimated arrivals for road users, based on real-time road conditions and traffic flow. This contributes to quicker responses and the implementation of traffic solutions that reduce congestion and enhance road safety for motorists," added Al Ali.
