30th ITS World Congress Dubai Highlights Future of Transportation Safety and Sustainability
The second day of the 30th ITS World Congress, a major event on intelligent mobility and transport digitalization organized by ARTICO and hosted by Dubai's RTA from September 16 to 20, 2024, under the theme "Mobility Driven by ITS," featured an International Forum that explored the Harnessing of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and emerging technologies for transportation safety and sustainability.
The forum presented a distinguished panel, including keynote speaker Mr. Brian Cronin, Director of the Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office at the U.S. Department of Transportation, and Ms. Selika Josiah Talbott, Founder & CEO of Autonomous Vehicle Consulting, who moderated the discussion. The panel also featured thought leaders such as Ms. Mina Sartipi from the University of Tennessee, Ms. Tracy Larkin-Thomason from the Nevada Department of Transportation, Mr. Abbas Mohaddes of Umovity, Dr. Ronald Wu of HwaCom Systems Inc., and Dr. Angelos Amditis, Chairman of the Board at ERTICO/ICCS, Greece.
The discussions highlighted how ITS and emerging technologies offer innovative solutions to longstanding challenges related to safety, environmental impact, and economic sustainability. Key topics included optimizing traffic flow, reducing emissions, and leveraging AI to enhance safety across various transportation settings. The forum underscored the importance of these technologies in creating transportation systems that are more efficient, resilient, and environmentally friendly.
Mr. Brian Cronin commented, “The integration of Intelligent Transportation Systems represents a fundamental shift towards safer, more efficient, and environmentally responsible transportation networks.”
Ms. Selika Josiah Talbott noted, “Emerging technologies are revolutionizing our approach to mobility. By embracing these innovations, we can tackle long-standing challenges and advance toward a smarter, more sustainable future.”
Ms. Mina Sartipi stated, “Harnessing connectivity and data analytics is crucial for transforming transportation systems. Our aim is to use these technologies to enhance safety and optimize operations across diverse environments.”
Ms. Tracy Larkin-Thomason added, “We are at a pivotal moment where adopting ITS and sustainable practices can reshape transportation, making it more resilient and equitable for everyone.”
Mr. Abbas Mohaddes emphasized, “Innovation in transportation goes beyond technology; it’s about delivering real-world benefits. ITS and smart mobility solutions are key to addressing environmental and economic challenges.”
Dr. Ronald Wu concluded, “The future of transportation depends on our ability to effectively integrate advanced technologies. These integrations will help us achieve a safer and more sustainable mobility ecosystem.”
Attendees left the session with actionable strategies and best practices for implementing these advanced solutions into their transportation frameworks. The forum’s focus on practical outcomes and real-world applications highlighted ITS and emerging technologies as essential drivers for a safer, greener, and smarter future in transportation.
