Mattar Al Tayer receiving the Mayor of Addis Ababa

Al Tayer reviewed RTA’s efforts in advocating migration from private transport to public transport means saying: “Since established, the RTA had been endeavouring to improve public transport systems to make them the first mobility choice of people in the Emirate with the aim of raising the share of public transport to 20% of people’s mobility in the Emirate by 2020. Accordingly, the share of public transport has grown from 6% in 2006 to 14% in 2014.

“The RTA has undertaken major and vital public transport projects highlighted by the Dubai Metro, the longest driverless metro in the world extending 75 km, the 11 km-long Dubai Tram project, a massive fleet of public buses comprising more than 1560 buses, a full range of marine transit modes, and taxis. Public transport in Dubai has become vital for the daily mobility of residents and visitors and the number of public transport riders in 2014 has exceeded half a billion riders at a rate of 1.47 million riders per day,” he continued.

“The RTA has introduced modern technologies in operating public transport systems comprising NOL fare collection cards valid on all public transit means including the metro, buses and the water taxi, in addition to the migration to smart services,” continued RTA’s Chairman of the Board and Executive Director.

The Mayor of Addis Ababa commended the swift completion of mega transport infrastructure projects in Dubai including roads, Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram in a short period, and hailed the integration of mass transit modes. He also praised the fabulous design, high-class finishing and excellent passenger services offered to metro and tram riders. He added that he would be looking forward for exchanging expertise and holding joint workshops about the planning, construction and operation of transport means, and upgrading the infrastructure of roads and public transport systems to contribute to the economic development through injecting investments and boosting the business activity.
