RTA supports Engineers without Borders initiative of AUS

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has sponsored the initiative of the American University of Sharjah, branded as ‘Engineers without Borders’ through supporting a group of engineering students hailing various specialties (such as electrical, mechanical and civil engineering). Thanks to RTA’s support, the students have travelled to Indonesia to take part in building and refurbishing social centers, homes and water network in a village in that country.

Ms. Moaza Al Marri, Director of Marketing & Corporate Communication, Corporate Administrative Support Services Sector, RTA, said: “The support accorded by the RTA to this initiative is line with its social responsibility and the public interest. Such a support is intended to raise the value of philanthropic activities in the conscience of the rising generations and embed the sense of responsibility amongst university students who will steer the future development drive in our beloved country.

“The RTA spares no effort in supporting students at various levels. For instance we have launched ‘Iqra’: (Read) initiative to encourage school students to read more and broaden their knowledge scope and understanding of the present and the future. We have also rolled out ‘Ibtiaath’ (scholarship) initiative where the RTA bears university tuition fees of secondary school graduates to study in specialties needed by the RTA so that they can fill vacancies in future. The RTA fully appreciates the importance of this category and does its level best to fulfill to their academic requirements,” added Al Marri.

Engineer Ms. Toqa Khalid, Head of ‘Engineers without Borders’ program at the American University of Sharjah, expressed her deep appreciation of RTA’s support to this program. “Such a support underscores RTA’s responsibility towards various community spectrums, specially students, and is bound to have a positive impact in honing the skills of participants, boosting their sense of responsibility, and nurturing the volunteering culture in their hearts.

“It is easy for an individual or an organization to donate funds or assistance in-kind to needy persons in any place in the world where people experience miserable living conditions or disastrous situations resulting from economic or environmental circumstances or even wars. But what our group ‘Engineers without Borders’ at the AUS has done is something different. We have decided to play an active role in ending the sufferings of those stricken people by reaching out to them and serving them in person. We have opted on this approach after our teams felt that the direct interaction is best way for helping these needy persons. This conviction was the driving force underlining the launch of the program at the AUS to offer assistance to students who have the passion to practice more humanitarian works, not only through donations but also through field participation in improving the living conditions of disadvantaged individuals anywhere,” added Toqa.

“The ‘Engineers without Borders’ at the AUS is highly grateful for the kind assistance of the RTA in sponsoring this initiative and helping us realize our vision,” she concluded.
